My Favorite Products and Habits That Make Working Out at Home Actually Fun

At-home workouts have been a total game changer for my fitness level.

As a busy working mom and student, I just don’t have the extra time in my schedule to “make it to the gym.” I tried for a few years, but I would only make it once every week or two—which gave me very little result for all that effort.

Working out at home gets a bad reputation. Whenever I mention it to friends or clients, I usually get groans and eye rolls. The most common complaint? They can’t get motivated to start or stay focused long enough to get in an effective workout.

But now, I actually love working out at home just as much—if not more—than going to the gym. I even go to bed looking forward to my workout the next day!

As a result, I’ve managed to consistently work out every weekday this year so far, and I’ve seen much better results than when I was “trying to make it to the gym.”

So how did I get here?

By making it fun.

That’s really the secret.

Below are the simple products and habits that helped me build a consistent, effective workout routine at home—without it feeling like a chore.

1. Set Up Your “Home Gym”

This sounds expensive and fancy—but it absolutely doesn’t have to be.

If you’re on a budget, you can get started with almost nothing: a screen to watch, a towel, and a little bit of floor space.

Over time, I’ve collected a few pieces of equipment and created a small dedicated space in my home. For aesthetics, I keep everything tucked away in drawers and baskets—but it’s all within reach in front of the screen I use for workouts.

My go-to items:

  • Yoga mat

  • Neoprene dumbbells

  • Step platform

  • Elliptical (optional, but great if you have one)

  • AirPods + wired earbuds (backup is key!)

  • Fun, high-energy playlists (this makes a HUGE difference)

2..Your Workout Starts the Night Before

This one is a game changer—especially if you’re not a morning person, have a busy schedule, or just struggle to get going in the morning.

Take a couple of minutes at night to set yourself up for success:

  • Lay out your workout clothes right next to your bed

  • Prep a drink you actually look forward to (I love a big tumbler of ice with a sugar-free lemonade)

  • Choose workout clothes you feel good in—bright colors or fun styles can really boost your mood

  • If waking up is tough, a sunlight alarm clock can make mornings feel much more natural

The goal is to remove as many decisions as possible in the morning.

3. The Non-Negotiable 20 Minutes

This is the habit that made consistency finally click for me.

No matter how busy life gets—with kids, pets, work, and school—I can always find 20 minutes.

That small commitment makes it easy to say:
“Yes, I can do that.”

But here’s the key—you have to make those 20 minutes count.

This isn’t a slow stroll (unless you’re adding sprints!). This is where you push yourself and bring the energy.

What helps:

  • High-energy playlists you love

  • Quick YouTube workouts

  • Alternating cardio and strength days

The best part? In the time it used to take me just to drive to and from the gym, my workout is already DONE.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been struggling to stay consistent with working out, it might not be a motivation problem—it might just be that your routine isn’t enjoyable yet.

You don’t need a perfect plan or hours of free time.

Start small. Make it fun. Find what you actually enjoy.

When your workouts feel good and fit into your real life, consistency becomes so much easier—and that’s when the results start to show.

Healthy living doesn’t have to feel like a chore. It can actually be something you look forward to.

Now let’s go make everyday a fit and fun day!
